Nexus One - Great Android Features, Poor Sales

In only two months Google has succeeded to release on the smartphone market two new brave competitors against iPhone: Droid and Nexus One. Google didn't venture alone in this battle and has as partners Motorola and HTC Corporation, Verizon and T-Mobile.

Although only two months separate the Droid from the Nexus One the differences between the two of them are quite significant, but the most striking of all is the difference in sales. If the Motorola Droid, known on the European and Asian markets as Motorola Milestone, sold 250,000 units in its first week, according to the market analytics firm Flurry, Nexus One didn't surpass the 20,000 threshold.

At this point many of us are wondering how come a smart looking phone, with a 3.7 inch AMOLED display, 5MP color camera, Bluetooth 2.1, Wi-Fi, Micro-USB port, and internal GPS antenna, such as Nexus One failed to convince buyers.

A possible cause is the much too high 9 (unlocked) price tag and an unfortunate marketing strategy. If Verizon invested million to promote the Droid, aiming directly at iPhone (remember the I Don't commercial?), Google settled to promote and sell Nexus One on its own website, which proved to be a not very user-friendly experience. Some even say that the timing of the release was not a very inspired decision, Nexus One being released after the Christmas period, on January 5th. If we add to all these the customer dissatisfaction with the customer service offered by Google which is limited to e-mail, then the 20,000 units sold are fully justified.

Nexus One may not be as "magic" as its relative the Droid (remember the "It's magic" soundtrack?), but it has a lot of great features which can make up for the lack of marketing strategy. One of them is the Android 2.1 operating system which brings along the "Gallery" app which makes it easier to vision pictures, by swiping your fingers and the "Live Wallpapers" application which uses the 3D animation for a more real sensation.

In terms of hardware, Nexus One brings in an Audience A 1026 voice processor which together with the two microphones are able to reduce the background noise and give a superior sound quality. Regarding the memory capacity, the initial 512 MB DRAM can be expanded up to 32 GB, through the microSD slot. With a rechargeable battery which lasts up to 290 hours on standby, and with a slim, curved body, Nexus One is a remarkable presence on the smartphone market.

So, the sales so far are only a curve on a graphic and can't really depict the capabilities of the Nexus One.
